More Unrest at Kiri; Dalai Lama Denied Visa
Oct 4th 2011, 12:42

Edward Wong reports for the New York Times that another monk of Kirti monastery has set himself on fire, according to Free Tibet. The monk was said to have been holding a picture of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. It's not clear if the monk survived.

Wong also writes of reports that on Saturday, Tibetans of Seda, in Sichuan Province, hung a large picture of the Dalai Lama and a Tibetan flag from a central building. Both are banned in China.

When authorities took down the image and the flag, about 200 Tibetans protested peacefully in the streets. The group passed out leaflets that said, "Tibetan brethren do not fall asleep under the oppression of the Chinese. Fight for the your religion, language and customs."

Meanwhile, the government of South Africa has failed to provide a visa to the Dalai Lama. His Holiness had been invited to South Africa to receive the Mahatma Gandhi International Award for Peace and Reconciliation and give a lecture in honor of Archbishop Desmond Tutu's 80th birthday. The trip has been canceled.

It is assumed the government caved to pressure from China. China is South Africa's largest trading partner. South Africa's story is that it hasn't actually refused the visa application; they just haven't acted on the application.
