How Not to Win Hearts and Minds
Aug 15th 2011, 13:38

A few days ago I blogged about Beijing's plans to install its Panchen Lama in Labrang Monastery, in Xiahe, China. This has now come to pass. Monks were coerced into attending a welcoming ceremony, but they spoke loudly during the ceremony to show their displeasure.

Recent news stories have told us that foreigners were barred from northwest China ahead of the visit. The Chinese Panchen Lama also has a heavy security entourage.

Beijing is said to be attempting to bolster the lama's standing in the eyes of Tibetans by placing him among other Tibetan monks for the first time in his life. Labrang is a risky choice, however. It has been the site of anti-Beijing protest in recent years.

Elsewhere in China -- The Voice of America reports that a Buddhist monk in Sichuan Province died today after setting himself on fire. Reports say the monk shouted "Long life the Dalai Lama" before he died.
