The Future of Tibet
Aug 17th 2011, 14:36

Last March, His Holiness the Dalai Lama relinquished the last of his political power. Now the head of state of the Tibetan government in exile is the Kalon Tripa, or prime minister. The new Kalon Tripa, Lobsang Sangay, was sworn in last week.

Today Mr. Sangay has an op-ed in the New York Times that is worth reading. It doesn't directly discuss Tibetan Buddhism, but the future of Buddhism in Tibet very much depends on whether Beijing is willing to give Tibet some degree of autonomy, which Mr. Sangay does discuss.

In particular, Mr. Sangay says that his government will continue to pursue the "middle way" policy begun by the Dalai Lama . "Genuine autonomy for Tibet within the People's Republic of China" would be "a win-win proposition for both the Tibetans and the Chinese," he writes.
