Monks in the News
Sep 11th 2013, 21:30

Reuters reports that a "government-appointed body that oversees Myanmar's Buddhist monkhood" has banned formal organizations based on the "969" movement. This is the movement, led by a monk named Wirathu, that has been accused of stoking anti-Muslim violence in Burma.

The government-appointed body is a committee of monks that oversees the monastic sangha. I do not know how much authority they have, but this seems to be a step in the right direction.

In other news, scientists realized that the endangered snow leopard is being protected by hundreds of Buddhist monasteries in the Tibetan plateau. Many monks patrol wild areas to prevent poachers from killing the rare cat.
