Tragedies and Tibet
Mar 7th 2012, 10:06

I've come to think of March as Tibet Month. March 10 is anniversary of the 1959 Lhasa uprising, a date solemnly observed by Tibetans and supporters of Tibet around the world. So this month I plan to feature Tibet, beginning with a look at Milarepa.

There have been three more self-immolations in the past week, bringing the total of such incidents that we know of to 25, I believe. His Holiness the Dalai Lama has publicly discouraged these desperate acts, saying that he fears their only result will be tighter restrictions on Budhism  in Tibet. Meanwhile, Beijing claims the Dalai Lama is orchestrating the suicides.

Beijing has closed areas with ethnic Tibetan communities to foreign visitors until April. It appears that China plans to put down any demonstrations with brute force. Regional Communist Party secretary Zhang Chunxian said this week, "When an event occurs, we resolutely smash it. When an incident occurs, we also smash it."
