A Century of Buddhism in Utah
Sep 8th 2012, 11:18

Here's a big shout-out to the Jodo Shinshu Buddhists of Utah, celebrating one hundreds years of practice in the 45th state! On September 15, Shin Buddhists will gather at the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City to celebrate their centennial. The theme of the gathering will be "Walking the Path of Enlightenment, 100 years of Buddhism in Utah."

There were Japanese immigrants in Utah as early as the 1880s, and at the turn of the century they came in larger numbers, mostly to work for the railroad companies. In 1912 the Intermountain Buddhist Church was founded in Ogden by the Rev. Kenryo Kuwabara. A temple was established in Salt Lake City a few years later. Today there is a Jodo Shinshu temple in Honeyville, Utah, also.
