Assaulted Nun May Stay in Order
Jul 22nd 2011, 09:40

The Times of India reports that the nun who was sexually assaulted in a bus in Nepal "likely" will be allowed to return to her order after all. She is still hospitalized for trauma in Kathmandu, but it appears that when she is sufficiently recovered she will be able to return to her convent, Karma Samtenling Nunnery at Pharping.

"The Nepal Buddhist Federation distanced itself from a statement signed by over a dozen organisations, including one of its own officials," the Times says. It seems the NBF is responding to an international condemnation of its earlier policy. The NBF now says,

"NBF in collaboration with our allied Association Tamang Lama Gedung Sanghand the concerned nunnery is taking steps to accommodate her back into the nunnery when she recovers and discharged from the hospital. NBF will do everything in its power to help restore the dignity of the nun and continue to fight for justice."

There is also continued consternation that the nun was refused admission to a public hospital after the assault, forcing her impoverished family to borrow money to pay a private hospital. Government agencies in Nepal have since taken over her care and have seen to it she is receiving proper treatment in a pubic hospital.
