I'm continuing to dig into events in Burma (Myanmar). As I wrote earlier this week, the Time magazine cover story on "The Face of Buddhist Terror" has caused the government of Burma to ban Time. The government has also defended radical monk Wirathu as a "son of Buddha," according to the Wall Street Journal.
However, there was an earlier article in The Week that accused the radicals and the government of coordinating attacks, and which said the government is stirring up the violence to discredit rights advocate Aung San Suu Kyi. The article quotes a Burma expert named Bertil Lintner who said the attacks on Muslims appear to be coordinated, probably by the government. The point appears to be to push Daw Suu Kyi into condemning the violence outright, which would cost her support among Buddhists. But if she doesn't, it will cost her support among those who support her because of her rights advocacy. Her statements so far have been cautious.
