Paula Bronstein/Getty Images Lumbini is set in the foothills of the Himalayas in Nepal, and as the birthplace of the Buddha it is a popular destination for pilgrims and tourists. Remarkably, the site of Lumbini was lost for a thousand years. It was rediscovered in 1895 by a German archaeologist, who found a pillar erected by the the Emperor Ashoka (ca. 304â€"232 BCE) marking the place of the Buddha's birth.
