There's a World Conference of Buddhism going on in South Korea right now, and the 17 member Chinese delegation has walked out, packed their bags, and gone home. Why? Because envoy from His Holiness the Dalai Lama is there, also.
The Dalai Lama's envoy is Professor Venerable Samdhong Rinpoche, a former kalon tripa (prime minister) of the Tibetan government in exile. He is the 5th Samdhong Rinpoche and considered to be one of Tibet's most prominent Buddhist scholars. Yet on Tuesday His Holiness and two other Tibetan delegates were forced to leave a delegates' assembly meeting because the Chinese were having a snit. But apparently the Chinese delegation could not stand even to be in Korea at the same time as an associate of the Dalai Lama, so they went home.
Now that the Chinese have gone, Phayul reports, the Tibetans are fully participating in the conference.
The conference, which will conclude June 16, is being held in Yeosu City and is being hosted by the Jogye monastic order. The theme of the conference is "Solving Social Issues With Dharma."
