Eihei Dogen returned from China in 1227, bringing with him Soto Zen Buddhism. For ten years he lived in established temples and taught Zen in Kyoto . Then he left Kyoto and withdrew to the country, to what is now Fukui Province. His original small hut grew to a large monastery, Eiheiji.
Eiheiji today is still an active monastery and one of the main temples of Soto Zen. It houses an original manuscript of Fukanzazengi, Dogen's instructions for zazen. Fukenzazengi still is chanted, studied and practiced by Soto Zen Buddhists.
