I was reading a story about a social worker who was asked if she could have one do-over, what would it be? She answered that she was "too Buddhist" to answer the question. "I will have many do-overs," she said. She looked forward to infinite do-overs, in fact.
Looking forward to infinite rebirths is not a typical attitude in Buddhism, although I suppose she could have been manifesting enthusiastic practice of the bodhisattva vows. But the thought of "getting" infinite do-overs, la Groundhog Day, gnawed at me. It felt off. It seems closer to say that we are the do-overs.
That said, the Buddha taught us not to dwell on the past or dream of the future, but to focus on the present. Don't assume there will be a do-over!
